The City decided to deploy its own fiber network and then open it for use by businesses and citizens after private companies Time Warner Cable and Embarq said they would not provide fiber infrastructure, Freeman explained. Embarq provides telephone service across Wilson County. Time Warner is the city’s cable TV provider.The city's phone company, Embarq, is a small, local phone company piece spun off by Sprint-Nextel to satisfy regulators and as such doesn't have the resources to build a modern network. It, apparently, has decided to cooperate. Time-Warner, the cable company chooses not to comment. Lafayette's advice: watch out for the cable guy!
